Over the summer I blogged about a “buttercup bag” (pattern courtsey of Made by Rae) I made for someone as a gift, and now that Christmas has finally passed, I can reveal that I made this little purse for my niece. Since then, I have planned on making more buttercup bags for which I’ve amassed some fun materials, but until this month I did not complete another.
The first thing I did this time was enlarge the pattern 130% and I really like this new size…the original is darling but a bit small for my personal taste and needs. Another change this time was the strap. I was unhappy with the way it was attached last time, so for this one I went another route and tucked the ends into the seam. BIG improvement (although it took a wee bit of trial and error to get this to work out). I also got brave and included the snap in the lining to hold the bag closed, which turned out to be way easier to execute than I thought.
Though I did not recycle material for the outside this time, I did use a heavier weight home dec fabric I found on sale. I like the structure of a heavier fabric for the outside and so far have avoided messing with interfacing. This material may seem a bit strange (especially with the funky paisley lining) and the true color is kind of hard to capture on film, but I was really drawn to it and have quite a bit more I hope to create something else with. Actually, I want to make a twin of this bag for myself since this particular one is actually another gift. I’m sure this is not the last incarnation I make of the buttercup since I am becoming quite a fan of this purse pattern.
